3-D Service employees successfully completed refurbishment of a Westinghouse 10,000 HP rotor for Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel. Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation, headquartered in Wheeling, West Virginia, is a producer of carbon flat rolled products for the construction, container, appliance, converter/processor, steel service center, automotive and other markets. The company's products include various sheet products such as hot rolled, cold rolled, hot dipped galvanized, electro-galvanized, black plate and electrolytic tinplate.
The project included fabrication and installation of new ring insulators and re-insulation of bussing on the rotor from rings to coils. Additionally, blades were sand blasted, dye-penetrate inspected for cracks, and then welding and brazing repairs were made to the cracks. Finally, a keyway was machined in the shaft and a new coupling half was bored, keyed, and then installed. 3 -D Service’s large machining capability was a significant contributor to the success of the project.
The Heyligenstaedt 7P lathe recently installed by 3-D Service was used to turn the rings and polish the bearing journal. The large lathe also facilitated total indicator run out checks of the 45-ton rotor. This was among the first projects for which the lathe was used after its installation. In addition to the Heyligenstaedt lathe, 3-D Service has full machine shop capabilities, including 60-ton lifting capacity, electroplating, rebabbitting, welding, reverse engineering, shaft and journal repair, chrome and nickel plating, and CAD engineering/documentation.
