In Economic Downturn Magnetech Grows Power Service Business

When all the economic news seems to be doom and gloom, when each day brings reports of more layoffs and plant closures, Magnetech Industrial Services is expanding their business.  Headquartered in Massillon, Ohio, Magnetech Industrial Services and its 3-D Service division are expanding their transformer repair business to include complete rewind and remanufacturing.

Magnetech has always offered field services for all types and sizes of transformers, including field refurbishing, bushing replacement, turnkey replacements, internal inspection and repair, fluid services, load tap changer (LTC) inspection and maintenance, electrical testing, and mechanical services.  In mid-2008, the company entered the transformer rewind and remanufacturing market.  “Due to aging electrical infrastructure and capital investments by electric utilities coupled with a national shortage of transformer repair capacity, we feel this is the right time and right market for expansion,” said Ed Matheny, VP of Sales and Marketing.  “In the last four years, two northeast Ohio transformer rewind shops have closed,” Matheny added.

Magnetech has added to their workforce and invested in equipment and facility upgrades.  “We have highly experienced crafts people with an average 20 years of experience in the industry,” said Matheny.

Magnetech Industrial Services and its 3-D Service division offer reconditioning, repair and remanufacturing services for oil-filled and dry-type transformers up to 25 MVA base rating ( ≤ 69 kV).  Magnetech’s first complete 3-phase rewind, a 5/6.25/7 MVA oil-filled transformer for Georgia Pacific, recently shipped from their Massillon repair facility.  The rewind was completed in less than half the time required to purchase a new transformer and at 60% of the cost, saving the customer both time and money.  Additionally, the company continues to offer its full range of field services as well as voltage regulator maintenance and oil sampling.

With eight facilities nationwide, Magnetech is capable of providing field service and in-shop services nationally as they continue to grow all of their power service offerings, including wind energy services; turbine, turbine generator, circuit breaker, switchgear, and substation repairs; and turnkey circuit breaker/switchgear upgrades.  Magnetech recently completed two major turbine overhauls – a 20 MW turbine for Georgia Pacific and a 37.5 MW turbine for Detroit Edison.  As a result of Hurricane Ike, they have had over 15 technicians in Texas since September helping return various energy companies to operation.
