Magnetech and 3-D Coming Together to Better Serve You

Since its acquisition of 3-D Service in December, 2007, Magnetech Industrial Services has been working together with 3-D to realize their overall potential and become your single source for all your industrial service needs.  The following case stories demonstrate how Magnetech and 3-D are combining their experience and their resources to better serve their customers.

Case #1
MultiServ of Canada sent a 65-inch ball handling magnet to the Magnetech facility in Boardman, Ohio to be rewound.  Upon inspection it was found that varnish and potting compound had penetrated through the windings of the coil preventing the coil insulation from being stripped.  Potentially over 1,500 pounds of copper conductor would have been scrapped out.

Through discussions between Magnetech’s Boardman shop manager and 3‑D’s Massillon, Ohio shop manager, it was jointly decided to attempt saving the copper conductor by sending the magnet to Massillon, which has an 8-foot burnout oven.

In doing so, the varnish and compound was extracted from the windings, and the conductor was saved.  This saved the customer over $9,000 in costs had new conductor been required, and also provided cost justification to rewind the coil rather than scrapping it. Since then, Massillon’s burn out oven has been used routinely to reclaim conductor from magnet coils.

Case #2
Associates from the Magnetech South Bend facility and 3-D Massillon facility worked together to cryogenically clean and recondition a 12.5 MW Allis Chalmers turbine for Peru Utilities in Peru, Indiana.  The rotor work was performed in Magnetech’s South Bend facility and the stator work was performed on-site at Peru Utilities.

The rotor work scope included dry ice blasting rotor coils, rotor assembly and air passages then performing inspections and electrical testing.  Additionally, new coil extensions and retaining ring insulation was installed.  The rotor coil extension and blocking were spray insulated and slip rings were resurfaced.  Before shipping the unit back to Peru Utilities for re-installation, the rotor assembly was balanced and painted.

The stator work scope also included dry ice blasting followed by inspections and electrical testing.  Upon inspection, it was found the stator required new wedging.  Magnetech submitted a quote for the additional work and upon approval, Magnetech and 3-D field service technicians installed new wedges and top-fillers, repaired stator blocking, tying, coil knuckle insulation, and connecting ring ties.  Finally, technicians sealed the stator coil extensions and connecting rings and painted the stator assembly with red insulation enamel.  All work was performed on-site at Peru Utilities.

Additional work included cryogenically cleaning the three main turbine breakers and cleaning, inspecting and recoating the buss runs from the breakers to the turbine stator connections.

Work was completed two days ahead of schedule.  The customer was so pleased with the timeliness and quality of workmanship, that they are now using the new Magnetech for all their turbine work.
